Beauty treatments for mothers-to-be is big business, and seems only to be growing year on year. Frequently we are asked if it is safe to spray tan a pregnant lady.

When someone asks you "can I have a spray tan if I'm pregnant?", the official answer is yes. There is currently no scientific research to suggest that this is unsafe. For your own protection, however, we recommend a few precautions:

  • You should always have your clients sign some form of disclaimer (included as standard with our client consultation cards), but this is even more important with pregnant women. Have them acknowledge that you have advised them to check with their doctor first and that receiving a spray tan from you is entirely at their own risk.
  • You should also always perform a patch test, but again, this is absolutely essential if you will be treating a pregnant client. To play it safe, always use the most gentle spray tan formula that you can, free from common allergens, such as our Original, Fresh Indulgence spray tan solution.
  • Keep the room well-ventilated and, if possible, have your client wear nose filters. This will prevent any spray tan solution entering them internally (through inhaling it) and show that you have done your due diligence.
  • If you want to play it ultra-safe, use manual application to apply the tan, using a high-quality tanning mitt.

Bear in mind that during pregnancy, a woman's hormones are all over the place, and this can influence the quality of her resulting tan too. Make your client aware of this fact. Even if she has had many fake tans with you in the past, the colour and quality of her tan during pregnancy may be radically different than before. It's essential to inform your client of this fact so that if the result isn't as good as usual, she does not blame you!
