Spray Tan Tips

Whether you are a professional spray tan technician or applying your own self-tan at home, there are a number of important spray tan tips you or your client can follow for the perfect fake tan:

Exfoliate

This is very important. Exfoliation removes the all of the dead skin, meaning that the resulting fake tan will be even and long-lasting. If the skin is not exfoliated, the tan will cling to the dead skin cells resulting in a patchy tan; your tan will also fade unevenly as the dead skin cells fall off naturally leaving less tanned skin below. We recommend exfoliating the night before with an organic sugar scrub.

Tan naked

Some people prefer to tan completely naked, others wear spray tan disposables like disposable bras - but this isn't what we mean. The most important step you can take before your tan is to ensure that your skin is totally free of any chemicals, oils or perfumes. If you've exfoliated the night before, have a quick shower the next day with little or no soap (if you are using soap, we recommend a pH neutral variety). Do not apply any moisturiser when you get out of the shower. Any kind of oil or cream on your skin will act as a barrier to the spray tan solution. Do not apply any deordorants or perfumes, as these again are chemicals which will change the pH of your skin and will result in a streaky or even discolouration of your fake tan (green streaks coming down from your armpits - not a great look).

Look after your tan

The best way to prolong your beautiful new spray tan is to look after it. Avoid strenuous, sweaty exercise which will prematurely strip your tan. Avoid saunas and steam rooms for the same reason. Swimming pools are a definite no-no as their harsh chemicals will definitely not be good for your new fake tan.

Do not exfoliate after your spray tan (until around the 12th-14th day as your tan starts to fade and you begin preparing for your next tan). If possible, use an oil-free moisturiser, like our aloe vera moisturiser which has been specially formulated to hydrate the skin without removing your tan.
